Powder coating and sandblasting

What each process does, and what helps when you ask for a quote.

The finish

Powder coating

Powder coating is a dry finish. Fine powder is sprayed onto clean, bare metal, where an electrostatic charge holds it in place.

The part is then baked. The heat melts the powder so it flows together and cures into one continuous coating, rather than drying the way paint does.

Because the coating bonds to whatever surface is under it, the metal has to be clean first — which is where sandblasting comes in.

The preparation

Sandblasting

Sandblasting — abrasive blasting — drives fine abrasive at the surface under air pressure.

It strips old paint, old coatings, rust and mill scale, and leaves bare metal with an even, slightly rough surface that a new coating can grip.

If you are not sure whether your part needs blasting, ask when you call or request a quote.

Before you call

What helps with a quote

The more the shop knows about the part, the easier it is to quote. Any of these helps:

  • Photos, or a short description of the part
  • Its rough size
  • The metal, if you know it
  • The current finish — paint, an old coating, rust or bare metal
  • The colour and finish you want
